Woodworking 101
Over the course the coming weeks, I am going to be teaching you the ins and outs
of woodworking, in hopes that you will be able to really excel and enjoy your new
hobbie. So without further ado, let’s dive right in, shall we?
Working with wood is a lot of fun! It is an art, as a matter of fact. And woodworking projects can range from basic, simple projects like making a shelf, to more advanced projects like full-fledged custom design heirloom furniture pieces, and of course everything in between.
Many begin with prefabricated kits to learn the ropes. These kits can not only save you time learning and building, but often a lot of money. Because with packaged projects, there’s no need to buy entire cans of paint and packages of nails and other accessories, for instance. You get what you need, all in one package, at one price – usually at a savings.
Here are some basic guidelines you need to learn about when working with wood:
Safety:
Think ‘Safety first!’ with all projects, small to large, even if you are not a novice. Too often, people get in a hurry and don’t prepare the work area properly for safety.
And do not neglect to look out for other people who may be passing through your woodworking area. Keep sharp objects, dangerous tools and solutions, heavy equipment and wood pieces all out of the path of others and secure them so they can’t fall suddenly, spill or hurt anyone in any way.
Toolbox
Start a list of basic tools you need for your upcoming projects. The directions and blueprints should point out basics like a hammer, sandpaper, nails, hinges, brackets or braces, handles or knobs, drill, screwdrivers, any varnish, paint and other wood finishes you may need. Your local hardware or good online hardware store should have basic sets of drill bits, packaged nails in assorted sizes, assorted lengths and heads of screwdrivers, and more. Check with the customer service desk for help.
Woodworking Terminology:
Get hold of a good basic woodworking book or ebook with the basic industry jargon inside. This way you can print out pages you may need to learn or brush up on. And you can tackle project questions head on as they come up.
Wow, and to think this is only the beginning of a wonderful woodworking experience! Stay tuned for more lessons in woodworking.
