You can see many wind turbines if you drive between Los Angeles and Palm Springs, California. They were funded by the state when Gerry Brown was governor. People laughed at him for being so wind turbine conscious. He was tilting at windmills many said. But he was on the right track.
Today California still relies on the traditional method of electrical power but the wind turbine is a substantial contributor in some parts of the state. Today as we live in a time of save the environment mentality, threats of global warming, and going green the wind turbine is still making headway. Perhaps when companies can find a way to make money off them we will see more of them in use.
But if you have the zoning in your area you might want to consider one to reduce the money you spend on your power bill. You will have to install a tall tower and make sure your electrical wiring in your home or business is compatible with the wind turbine power source. The turbine works by collecting and using kinetic energy.
You will still need your local power company as a power source because you cannot rely on a regular wind source you need to keep the wind turbine spinning. But the more wind you have the less you will have to pay your power company.
If your turbine produces more power than you need however the power company will buy that power from you. You need a ten mile per hour wind, which is an average, if this is to make financial sense for you to put up a wind turbine system. The noise created is slight. It is like the noise from a washing machine so you should get no complaints from neighbors for the noise.
And it does not interfere with television reception. But you are looking at a tower of about one hundred feet when you install a wind turbine on your property. You will have to check with your local zoning laws to see if this is allowed in your area. You can expect to pay anywhere from five thousand to twenty five thousand dollars to have a wind turbine installed depending on the size and the manufacturer you contract with.
You will also have an annual maintenance cost. But after about fifteen years average your investment will pay for itself and you will have free power from there on out. For people looking to retire on their property this might be a worthwhile investment because they will not have to worry about power bill increases.
If you want to save even more money or get your investment to pay for itself sooner you can install the tower and the system yourself. Of you can always hire a company to do all the work and all the maintenance. The former California Governor Gerry Brown may have been thought to be crazy years ago. But there is nothing crazy about free electrical power.
