Why A Reference Is So Important

by

Seeking employment from a dwindling number of companies that are hiring is becoming increasingly difficult. There was a time – not that long ago – when job opportunities were plentiful and money reserves were large. The world’s most recent recession put paid to that ideal world. Now companies find their finances constrained, and there are resultantly more wary of employing total strangers. The rise of the reference has become huge.

This is a piece of writing which accompanies a job application. It is written by a respected person of authority and vouches for a candidate’s skill or personality as being helpful to the company he or she is applying to. For employers, they are increasingly important.

This kind of writing is so important because of the worth it has to employers. The person writing the paper is putting their own reputation at risk for a friend or colleague. This sort of trust in a person’s ability not to mess up is held in high regard.

There are two types of references available to people looking for jobs. Personal ones can come from a respected member of the community or family friend who has a high position in a university, for example. They can write that they have known a person for most of their life and believe them to be earnest and hard working. The candidate is therefore trading on the reputation of the person writing their supporting letter.

The other type of supporting letter is a purely professional one. This comes from a former employer, who notes how well a person worked at their previous job. It will often highlight the abilities they demonstrated or learned during their time there.

Usually these sorts of letters take the same form, regardless of who and where they come from. Several key characteristics, such as a person’s ability to communicate effectively, will be highlighted. Without fail, it will be mentioned that a candidate works well in a team situation.

This kind of document is significantly different to a personal vouching for a person, and is treated differently. Employers scan through it not for what it contains, but what it lacks. There is an unwritten code of what should be in a professional recommendation, and anything missing is noted.

Such a reference will sit alongside a whole packet of different information that an applicant must provide to the potential employer. They must also bundle in a specific application form and a resume, summing up their prior employment history. However these are all supporting players to the main star, which is indubitably the reference.

Getting a good reference is therefore hugely important for people who are seeking out gainful employment in any and all sectors. It often makes the difference between a successful and unsuccessful job application. Those who view it as a thing which can opted in or out of often miss out on employment because of their decision.
