When Couples Counseling Are Necessary

September 10, 2009 by

Marriage today isn’t the same as it had been in the past. With the fast pace of life and the changes in the society, relationships today encounter a lot more challenges than those in the past. And together with all the challenges couples face comes the rise and popularity of couples counseling . This type of counseling is geared toward addressing the many problems arising in modern marriages and relationships.

Couples counseling works just like any typical counseling or therapy . The only difference is that instead of being focused on an individual, this therapy is designed for relationships between husbands and wives. It focuses on properly handling the challenges encountered by married individuals and reinforcing their bond with the help of someone with enough knowledge and experience in managing relationship problems. The said person can be one of these three: a marriage counselor, a therapist, or a psychologist.

Counseling for both couples and individuals involve the same processes. The initial step involves identifying the goals of the husband and wife, or whoever is involved. Through the aid of the counselor, the couple must be able to pinpoint the goal of the counseling session. Does the couple aim to address certain problems in the relationship, understand certain things happening within the marriage, or strengthen the foundation of their marriage? In almost all cases of marriage counseling, the said goals are intertwined.

Once the goal is set, the next step is to identify problems or areas for improvement in the relationship. Many couples find it hard to identify and enumerate the concrete issues plaguing their marriage. Most of the so-called dilemma between husbands and wives are often mere symptoms of problems that root deeper. The role of the therapist is to help the couple determine the real problems in the relationship and expose them.

After the problems are identified, the couple should determine the needed changes in the relationship and in the behavior of the couple to solve the problems. Because follow up is a necessary aspect of marriage therapy, needed to help the married individuals adjust to the changes in their life, the process may take time.

Although an efficient counselor is needed to make the therapy successful, a large part of the success of counseling actually depends on the couple. For the counseling to succeed, both parties should be willing to undergo it. If one of the partners does not appreciate the importance of counseling, chances are it will fail. Both husband and wife must practice openness and honesty to each other and the therapist, and they must keep communication lines open. It is only through this that the couple can sort out all the problems with their marriage and deal with them correctly. And, both parties should also be willing to adjust their behavior and must have the desire to solve the problems in the relationship.
