What is the Best Mercedes Ever?
Talking about great Mercedes cars means dipping into quite a legacy. The company itself is named after the incredible ‘Mercedes’ racer that took the world by storm in 1901, and invented the wider wheel base of modern cars. The SSK of the 1930s showed the world again how far ahead Mercedes was, with this Ferdinand Porsche designed beast surpassing 120 miles per hour at a time when other cars could only dream of 100. Moving to the 70s you have the G-wagen redefining what a four by four should be capable of, and in the 00s the SLK Mclaren built model showed that 0-60 is three seconds was a possibility for something that looked like a saloon.
Move to the present day, and you’ve got a new model that’s beginning to be talked about as the ‘best ever.’ Knowing what that puts it up against makes it all the more impressive, but just looking at the SLS AMG gives you can idea of why it might just deserve that title. The bonnet and nose feel classic in a way that’s hard to define, while the body in profile is as modern and nippy as you get. And yet this is a saloon car, designed to get the rich and fortunate from A to B (at a cost of around $200,000).
The 6.2 litre V8 engine gets the most out of this beast. It’s a powerhouse that saw light in an SLK AMG series, believe it or not. Its push means the car can achieve 60 in a not-too-shabby 3.7 seconds, and has a top speed – electronically limited – of around 198 miles per hour. This power makes it suitable to be the current test car for F1 motor racing, and you can’t get better than that.
The motor show incarnations of the SLS have been pretty unforgettable. Some lucky buyer in Singapore snapped up the ‘Blackbird’ – a one off Australian made model with a vicious appearance, and the Desert Gold was a fabulous Dubai offering. Excitingly, there’s also going to be a Black Series release, with vastly reduced weight and better handling.
Mercedes achievements over the years makes it hard to pick a best ever, but right now, the SLS seems to be it.
