Wedding Photography – Information & Advice

by

Wedding photography is just as an important part of your big day as the wedding outfits and the wedding cake. You wouldn’t cut corners on either of those two things and neither should you when it comes to arranging who will take the photographs. Quite simply, you need to a professional wedding photographer. There are lots of them advertising their services, so finding one won’t be a problem, but finding a good one will take a bit of time and effort.

The experience of prospective wedding photographers is the main thing that you need to find out about. You need to find out how many weddings they have worked at before. This is more important than how long they have been a wedding photographer because someone who has been a wedding photographer for a year or two may well only have actually been hired for a few weddings during that time. Try not to get caught up in the spiel that they give about their other photographic experience (i.e. other than photographing at weddings) because it is only semi-relevant. The reason being that the skills and equipment needed to photograph weddings are different from those needed for other photographic scenarios.

Ask them if they are a member of any professional photographic organizations. These organizations require photographers to pass a stringent test and adhere to certain guidelines. Additionally, they require photographers to abide by a list of proper business practices. You need to visit several different photographers and carefully look through their portfolios. It may take a few meetings to find a suitable one, so you should not leave this to the last minute. Also, the later you leave it, the fewer the number of good photographers there will be available, as they will have been booked up in advance.

Even if you leave hiring a photographer to the last minute and are struggling to find one, or you are looking to cut costs somehow, you shouldn’t be tempted to ask a friend or family member to take your wedding photographs. This applies even if they are a keen photographer and are willing and happy to take on the role. This really is too important a part of your wedding to risk getting wrong, and unless you hire a professional the chances are that something will go wrong with the photos. Having only poor quality photos to remember your wedding by really is a very disappointing situation to be in.

To summarize, as with any type of service, you generally get what you pay for, and wedding photographers are no exception. If you have to cut costs somewhere as part of your wedding plans, try to cut them somewhere other than on the photography.
