Water is vital to the life of every person. It is one of the basic necessities of every living being to survive. And this very need of human beings is not fulfilled due to heavy industrial waste that makes water unfit to drink. This polluted water can lead to various infections and may act as a slow poison for us. Thinking this, each one of us install water filters as our homes. Water softeners and water distillers are among the most popular types of water treating techniques, with each offering its own benefits and drawbacks that should be considered before making a selection.
As the name implies, water softeners reduce levels of water hardness. Many either directly remove minerals from hard water, or they replace ionic hardness with salt ions. Water softeners do not disinfect the water; they do not address most problems with taste and smell of organic sources.
On the other hand, if your source water is untreated and may be susceptible to waterborne pathogens, water distillation is a good choice for drinking and cooking water.
Water softeners are relatively inexpensive whole-house treatment systems. Simple magnetic systems start under $800 and require little maintenance. More elaborate systems take out a wider variety of minerals and involve more initial expense and maintenance.
In order to get safe and drinkable water, one has to be very careful and particular about the timely cleaning of the distiller. Also, these are expensive as compared to the softeners.
Volatile organic chemicals are not distilled through water distillation method. Thus, we can say since, some of the chemicals are still present; these do not provide safe drinking water. Also, the electricity consumption to distill the water is high that proves to be very costly.
There are times when it is not advisable to use a water softener. Research has also found that soft water causes more leaching of heavy metals from pipes, and this can reach dangerous levels.
Based on the fact that there are always two sides of a coin, each water treatment methods posses various advantages and disadvantages. It depends completely on the water problem and user requirement.
