Want To Make Your Own Ice Cream?

by

Do you know what it means when a checkered table-cloth of red and white color is laid out by our mothers and grandmothers? A picnic in the house, that’s what it is. We would have fried chicken, potato salad, deviled eggs, watermelon, and our favorite homemade ice cream. Our favorite picnic spot was in our garden and near river banks. When we had our picnics on the river, there’s a particular location that we love to stay especially during the summer. We played, splashed and floated along with the gentle currents and it was the best part of life. The outdoors were our only way of having fun since ingenious devices were not within our reach at that time.We didn’t think about what we didn’t have; we just enjoyed what we did have. It was an unfussy, trouble-free, and unrestricted life.

Back then, we used the hand crank ice cream maker, a mechanical device that needs to be worked on, so one by one in the family exerted effort in doing so. By the time the electric ice cream maker came along, we also started to use those devices. Nobody gave the impression that they object on participating on the toil because each one of us were waiting to savor what we made. The amusing part was everybody still loved having the ice cream even if it was a different flavor each time we made one! When it’s summer and it’s hot, having a simple ice cream is very quenching. Eventually it didn’t stop us from making our own ice cream even when the season has chilled. The fireplace was our special spot where we made our favorite treat!

Nero, the Emperor of the Roman Empire was considered by some to be the father of ice cream. He sent his workers into the mountains to bring back snow and then was mixed with fruit pulp, nectar and honey. Some studies indicate that Marco Polo was the one who conveyed the water ice recipe, the original frozen delight from Asia to Europe. On the other hand, the locals of Alaska have had their own version of the ice cream for thousands of years. It was a mixture of reindeer fat, seal oil, fresh snow or water, berries, and at times they would include fresh fish. The name of this delicacy is Eskimo ice cream, or Akutag in their native language, that means to mix them together. Not only was it a yummy delight, it also has high nutritional value and Eskimos always had it with them, when they are journeying for miles and going out hunting. These days, Crisco and raisins are the common ingredients in the Eskimo ice cream. Sometimes, they add sugar, but every family has its own version of the ice cream because they try to add in their own personal ingredients that they like. The existing recipe for Eskimo ice cream as to date is a mixture of a cup of Crisco, a cup of sugar, half a cup of water berry juice or snow and four cups of fresh berries. First you will do is combine the Crisco and sugar until it becomes soft and it plumps up. Afterwards, pour in the liquids and blend it well. You can add the berries cup by cup slowly folding it in the mixture as soon as the liquids have completely blended in. Store in the freezer first to harden before consuming. My mom was a Crisco user and if she knew about this recipe back then, she would have frequently made this.

Nancy Johnson was the inventor of the first hand crank ice cream maker in 1846. She was a resident at the state of New Jersey.Unfortunately she did not patent her invention and as they say, the rest is history with the first commercial ice cream plant started by Jacob Fussell in 1861.

Homemade ice cream can still be made even when you are having fun outdoors, the hand crank ice cream machine will do that for you since we still have those in the market. On the other hand, when you are at home, there is an ice cream maker that you can just plug in and works wonders like the one we use at home.We have also chosen to make our own ice cream, not only because it tastes so much better, but we have control over the ingredients we use.I try to use all organic if at all possible. We usually do not follow exactly what is on the recipe, like for instance, one time we use organic milk, the next time we use soy milk or almond milk, all of this alternately. The fruits we mix in our ice cream are fresh and naturally grown. For it to taste sweet, we use Xylitol or Stevia. These sweeteners contain low amounts of sugar as compared to what is put in the ice creams sold at stores. If you read the ingredients on their label, you won’t even understand some of it or even say it. Soy or almond milk is an alternative for people who can still eat ice cream and not have allergic reactions because some people are allergic to dairy products.

You can savor your own ice cream recipe even without the party or guests coming over your house, or an outdoor gathering, or a recreational journey.Just add the ingredients to your ice cream maker, plug it in and go work in your garden, or on your painting, read a book, or just relax while the machine is doing all the work. Have fun!
