Wall lights should be chosen to complement the look of ceiling lighting and architecture as well as decoration of the home. Along with ceiling lights, well-chosen wall lights can add lasting aesthetic value to your home.
Wall lights are excellent for adding light to a hall, room, porch or outdoor area. They can be easily installed over any electrical outlet box. Lighting is usually divided into three different categories, according to its purpose.
Task lighting is designed to provide focused light for a specific task, such as reading or hobby work. Ambient light is for providing general illumination for a room or other area of the house. Accent lighting is used to highlight specific objects, such as a portrait or to create a mood through color, light and shadow.
For task lighting, you can easily use a wall fixture. But the basic purpose of a wall light is to light up a dark room, hallway or staircase. In case you want to create ambient lights in your room then you should put the walls at a distance of at least 6′. The distance of these lights should not be very low and should not be very high from the ground. You can install such lights 60 inches above the floor.
Wall sconce is a light fixture that is attached to a wall. This fixture has single arm that extends from the wall to a light bulb and have a glass, cloth or porcelain covering.
In torchieres, the direction of light is upwards as they have opening towards the ceiling. Torchieres are considered to be very good in generating ambient or mood lighting, especially when the shade or light bulb is colored.
Candle wall sconces were made to hold candles, oil lamps, hurricane lamps and gas lights. The extending arm is designed to hold the flammable candle away from the wall and the face plate (with shiny metallic surface) is made to reflect the light that increases its intensity.
Wall bracket light fixtures are more likely to have multiple light sockets than sconces, which tend to hold a single bulb. Lanterns are often used outdoors. They make a home look more welcoming and elegant. Lanterns can also be used indoors, although that is a more unusual choice.
