If you reside in the United States of America, you may have come across DOT helmets.
These helmets are not specially made. They simply sport the DOT certification stickers. The US Department of Transportation or DOT has certain rules and regulations pertaining to safety issues of motorcyclists in the US.
Hence, DOT regulations were made to cover safety and testing aspects of motorcycle helmets in the country. Similar to the US government, the UK and European Union governments have their very own safety regulations and testing standards. In the US, FMVSS or Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 218 gives the details of the requirements for DOT certification.
This applies to all motorcycle helmets sold in the US. Helmets that do not meet the DOT standard are not allowed for sale in the US. Manufacturers of helmets should submit their helmet models for testing to meet DOT standards in accordance with US Law.
The testing is normally done in a DOT certified testing lab in accordance with the proper procedures. One of the most important tests is the impact test. Considering the possible damage to the brain and live of a motorcyclist, the impact test can be considered to be the most critical among the series of tests.
If the helmet models pass the test, the manufacturers can affix the relevant DOT stickers. Another similar standard to DOT is called the Snell Standard. Passing the Snell testing standards, acquiring Snell certification cannot be used as replacement for DOT Standards, and testing.
However, it is the DOT certification, which is acknowledged by the US government for sale of motorcycle helmets in the US. Indeed, it would be a good move to buy a DOT helmet to be on the safe side.
