Using A Dielectric Union To Connect An Iron Pipe To A Copper Plumbing Pipe

by

The job of connecting an iron pipe to a copper pipe in a particular segment of a plumbing architecture requires intermediate skills. However, the homeowners must know the basic working of the soldering device or equipment. Generally, the joining operation of the copper pipe to an iron pipe is quite similar to the connection of copper fittings to a copper pipe. Though the task is quite straightforward but you have to employ certain additional components as well.

A dielectric union is one such component that is used at the juncture of copper pipe and iron pipe.

A dielectric union is a plumbing component that prevents the two metals from contacting each other physically. It renders an insulation barrier to the juncture of two metals such that they don’t face any integrity issues in the whole schema. The juncture of the two participating pipes may break down owing to the absence of dielectric union components.

Before installing the dielectric union, you need to braze the participating ends of the two pipes. With the help of a fitting brush, start brazing the inner sides as well as the outer surface of the copper pipe. The brazing operation would eliminate all the foreign objects that could pose a problem to the efficiency of the upcoming joining operation.

Use the fitting brush to braze the insides of the copper pipe as well. Restrict the application to the portions of the pipe that would take part in the upcoming connection. Next, use a flux brush to apply flux solution to the brazed surfaces of the copper pipe.

Kick off the actual task of installing the dielectric union component. Take out a screwdriver from your tool kit such that the tip of the screwdriver is in accordance with the finish of the screw on the dielectric union. Unscrew the dielectric union to distribute the unit into two halves. Pick up the part of the dielectric union that is supposed to deal with the copper segment and install it accordingly.

Solder the juncture using a solder and a heating torch. The solder melts down and joins the dielectric union to the face of the copper pipe. Follow the same procedure to install the other half on the iron pipe. Redo the screws on the dielectric union to finish off the proceedings.
