As the name suggests the power strip is a strip of power sockets arranged in a particular manner on a single ceramic or plastic board. Now the next thing comes in our mind that why we needed multiple ports. The simple answer is that to supply power to different appliances from a single power source. Portability makes power strips more popular.
A power strip does not make any kind of changes in voltage levels to the different appliances because it is based on parallel electrical connection system. It is simply the distribution of power from a single source to the multiple requires.
Traditional power strips used to be very simple in construction. Generally all the electrical sockets (5 to 7) are connected in parallel way of connection. External design may differ due manufacture and requirements.
A power strip must include some safety device. Since a number of costly appliances are connected with it. If somehow a fault occurs it may damage the appliances connected with it. Safety device like a fuse may help to reduce the complications of high voltage and short circuits.
Additional components like power supply wave filters, noise rejecters, power supply indicators and sometimes battery power in case of emergency makes the device more popular and dependable. But the cost increases proportionally.
As the market became more competitive power strips are available in different ratings and designs like toys. Ratings are mentioned with each power strip and should have a ISI mark too.
Power strips has mainly three wire connection that is mains, neutral and the ground. Mains and Neutral wires are generally copper wires and thin as compared to the ground wire. Trouble shooting in a power strip should be done by checking each point one by one. If some part of the power strip seems to be damaged then it should be completely replaced with a new genuine part.
Other applications like lighting system, multi mobile charging ports, heavy electrical appliances, laboratories etc. Thus a power stripe finds its application where we need a multi socket power supply.
