Becoming an engineer is not easy and, therefore, a strong engineering resume is necessary to land a job in that field. A good resume should indeed make the reader want to continue reading and, eventually, contact the applicant for a job interview. A successful applicant will want to follow these 10 engineering resume writing tips in order to land a great engineering job.
1) Rather than following a chronological order, make sure that you put the most important information first. That way, the reader will not just see what you have done previously, but will also see your related achievements.
2) Do not bother with writing an objective, as this is a thing of the past. The reader knows why you have sent your resume, so it is best to focus on things that the reader does not yet realize. A summary at the top of the page will grab the reader’s attention and is much more valuable than a standard objective.
3) Include the most important information that you wish to convey at the top of your resume because you want the employers to believe that you would be an asset. This will usually be your previous experience and education, as this is what matters for a prospective employer.
4) Make sure to include a list of projects that you have worked in your resume, as this will prove that you have experience in this field. You never know, the reader might even recognize some of the projects and be impressed with your work.
5) Use words in your resume that are used within the industry, as this will make you stand out. In some cases, your resume will not even be read unless it has these keywords, as recruiters are using scanning software to look for resumes including these keywords. You could have the best resume imaginable but without these words, it might not be read by anyone.
6) Proofread your resume completely because spelling and grammatical errors are a major turnoff for employers. A couple mistakes would make a bad first impression, so make sure that you go over this very carefully.
7) Keep everything that you include in your resume short and to the point. While you want to make sure that you don’t forget any relevant data do not get too wordy because this is a major turnoff for the reader and will quickly get very boring.
One common issue is that applicants list their job duties, rather than their accomplishments. You want to build yourself up as much as possible, so let them know what you have accomplished at your previous jobs.
9) Make sure that the employer sees the assets that you can bring by letting them know all about the special skills that you possess.
10) Everything in your resume should be positive, so do not say anything bad about previous employers or previous jobs. Ignore anything negative that has occurred previously and focus on the good stuff instead.
