Tips On Keeping Your Pets Away From Electrical Cords Lying On The Floor

March 21, 2010 by

The pets of your households can trigger an electrical hazard if any segment of the electrical setup is accessible to them. Hence, it is very important to conceal such segment before a possible hazard occurs. The electrical cords or wires lying on the floor or left suspended from the outlets are highly responsible for the onset of such accidents.

To prevent such an accident, take certain preventive measures in advance. You may need to alter the setting of the internal wiring as well to achieve the desired results. However, there are certain techniques that may serve the required purpose without getting into the technical aspect of the electrical setup.

The best way of preventing the electrical cords from getting chewed by the pets is to take the concerned wire away from the reach of the pets. The electrical cords lying either on the floor or along the lower half of the walls can be attached on an increased height on the walls. Use an adhesive tape to secure the length of the electrical cord to the walls. If the adhesive tape fails to stick to the wall surface then make use of nails and hammer. You can use an access board if you do not wish to spoil the beauty of your walls. Alternatively, the tables or shelves can be used to hide the electrical cords. Taking the electrical cord out of the sight of the pets would solve the problem completely.

One can also buy safety cables that act as a cover for the electrical cords and wires. The wrapping of such shield around the lying electrical cords makes them unsightly to the pets. Hence, the electrical cords become inaccessible to the pets and they fail to chew on the cords.

You can also go for some tricky methods to keep away the pets from the low-lying electrical cords. Use contact paper to wrap the length of the electrical cord lying on the floor. Make sure that the sticky side of the paper is exposed to the pets. The sticky surface of the wrapping would create a panic among the pets and they would feel scared to touch the wires.

Since the pets tend to take the wires in their mouth, the application of a bitter or bad tasting material on the wire would prevent the pets from chewing the insulation of the electrical cords.
