Tips On Installing A Cedar Shake Roof

There are different types of roofing materials that are available in the market nowadays. Each of these materials offers its own advantages and drawbacks. Common roofing materials are asphalt shingles, tiles, clay, rubber, metal (tin or copper) etc.
The cedar shake roofs are one of them. The most delightful feature associated with the cedar shake roofs is that they’re less susceptible to the fury of external agents such as air, water, sunlight and dust. In fact, the appearance of cedar shakes becomes more attractive with increased exposure to natural elements. In addition, they prevent the direct attack of insects as they’re insect proof.
Earlier, the cedar shake roofs were quite popular with the households. Due to the ill-fitted installation of cedar shakes, they witnessed a dramatic failure. With the emergence of new strategies in roofing such as tin roofing, rolled roofing, rubber roofing etc, the cedar shakes lost their ground in the market.

Due to the heavy weight of these cedar shakes, they require a strong and compact foundation. This can be achieved by a plywood base underneath the cedar shake layer. Kick off the campaign by laying roofing felt (or tar paper) across the entire length of the roof such that a bed of roofing felt is laid on the roof.
Take the cedar shakes to the roof one by one and start their installation job. Initiate the installation task from the left spread of the roof and move towards the right side. Make sure that the overhang on the fascia is maintained in the overall setup. Also, keep sufficient space between the successive shakes. The gaps would allow the regular phenomenon of expansion and contraction of wood.
Mount the setting by placing ridge-caps over the setup. Alternatively, two cedar shakes can be joined together to serve the required purpose.
The complications met in the project need to be handled by the roofer only. Hand over the complications to an expert as soon as possible.
