Times Tables Practice: Is It Necessary Math Help?

by

How important is it to give your child math help, particularly in the form of times tables practice? The concept of multiplying is not a difficult one to grasp, particularly in the early years when it is taught with concrete objects. So why is it necessary to have sets of numbers memorized?

Knowing the times tables is one of the cornerstones of success in math. Once the idea is learned, the fastest way to progress in math is to have the sets of numbers memorized.

Times tables need to be memorized mainly to allow your child to succeed with other work. Imagine your child working on a sum, perhaps a fraction problem. For some reason she is required to multiply both the top and bottom of the fraction by eight. There are two possible reactions to this situation.

If your child does not know her tables, she will stop solving the problem and start thinking about the eight times table, possibly running through the table in her head, or even counting it out on her fingers. Once the correct multiplication is found she will then have to recollect why she was checking her eight times tables, remember the instructions for solving the math problem and hold the multiplication solution in her head all at the same time. This is very difficult to do will lead to a great number of errors and much frustration for the child.

Now consider this same situation but with memorized tables. When your child sees that a number needs to be multiplied by seven she will be able to put the answer to that in the correct place immediately. This will not only reduce errors from the actual multiplication, but makes learning the new concept of working with the fraction a whole lot easier.

This exact scenario can be seen played out in classrooms right across the country every day. Children with weak basic skills struggle in math and find it difficult, boring and tiring while those with strong skills continue to develop.

The best way to ensure that your child has a positive experience learning math is to ensure that her basic skills are strong. You can help this happen by finding good math help resources for your child. Correct practice of times tables is a must, though this can be combined with a number of games to make the experience more enjoyable for younger children.
