Tightening The Compression Fittings In A Proper Manner
The common plumbing problem of leaks may be accredited to the faulty state of one of your plumbing fixtures. A compression fitting package comprises of a compression nut, a compression ring and a compression seat. Such fittings work on the compressing of the ring against the compression seat. The screwing of the compression nut allows the ring to create a compression against the compression seat.
After some time, such fittings tend to get loose and irregular. Hence, appropriate fixing must be done to ensure the normality of the setup. The most common repair work associated with such fittings involves the retightening of the nut. This is a routine task for the active homeowners. On the other hand, the unaware homeowners fail to apprehend the problem and avail the services of a plumber straightaway.
Active participation of the homeowners in the routine repair works would lower the maintenance cost of the plumbing setup to a large extent. In addition, the guidance of an expert can be availed throughout the length of the concerned plumbing project.
Before moving ahead with the proceedings, identify the different parts of a compression fitting unit. The part of the pipe that attaches to the fitting is actually the compression seat. The inlet tube leads from the compression nut and ends up on the compression seat. The base of the inlet tube carries a miniature component known as ‘compression ring’. The compression ring is the component that provides a leak-proof seal to the whole setup.
Disassemble the whole unit using appropriate-sized pipe wrenches and screwdrivers. Locate the male threads of the compression nut and check its physical status. If it looks weary then take out a roll of plumber’s tape from your tool kit. Wrap the tape around the male threads tightly such that the impression of threads is visible on the wrap. Put the inlet tube into the middle of the compression seat. Follow it up by sliding the compression nut over the seat. At some point of time, the female threads of the nut would overlap the male threads of seat.
Use your hands to tighten the fixture thereafter. Reassemble the setup and test the normality of the setting.
