Throw Your Hat in the Ring
It seems as though every presidential election begins heating up earlier than the last. The 2012 election is more than year away and candidates are doing whatever it takes to get a step ahead of the competition.
Yes, it’s always better to be prepared, but is it possible to enter too early?
If a politician announces his intention to run for office early, can it come back to haunt him? Isn’t he just giving time for the voters to see his flaws and dislike him? By throwing his name in the hat early, isn’t he just allowing more time for the media to dig up the dirt?
Or perhaps it’s best to fly under the radar, while doing all the prep work then throw your name in the hat. That way, when they finally announce the decision to run for president, they’ll be like a breath of fresh air. Everybody will be tired of the current candidates and it’ll be nice for voters to know they have another option.
A political party loves it when one of its members is in the White House for a first term, seeking a second. That’s the current situation for the Democrats who hope to re-elect President Obama. Even though people know who he is and they have seen him in the White House since 2009, party members will stick with him since he was their ticket in the first place and they’re riding the momentum.
So far, we know Represnetative Michele Bachmann and former Governor of Massachusetts Mitt Romney are set to run for the Republicans as they’ve already thrown their names into the hat. Texas Governor Rick Perry is set to announce his candidacy for the White House and former Governor of Minnesota Tim Pawlenty has yet to make a decision.
A question to ask is whether or not Bachmann, Romney and Perry announced their candidacy too early. Will Republicans be tired of them when the time comes to pick a candidate to run against Obama? If Pawlenty does run, when should he announce his decision?
