The Many Dangers Of Tanning Beds

June 13, 2009 by

There are many dangers to using a tanning bed extensively. What makes it more dangerous is the cultural craze for the tanned skin color and the 5 billion dollar tanning salon industry that wants to keep it going. It is important that everyone involved in such lifestyle be aware of the risks and proper precautionary practices.

A desire for some color in your skin is not out of the norm, but it becomes a dangerous fascination when people go to extremes not only to obtain a tan but when they try to speed up the process.

What’s more troubling is the unregulated practice of using tanning beds. Some tanning salons have their own rules when it comes to use but for some, it’s a dangerous habit that needs at least a little regulation from a third party like smoking, drug, and alcohol use.

The extended and regular use of tanning beds pose dangers that are on par with practices like smoking such as cancers and imbalance of natural bodily functions. Other problems resulting from tanning beds includes burns, suppression of immune system, damage to the cornea of your eyes, and drug induced photosensitivity.

The damamge to the skin begins with burns and dry, itchy skin. That is just the short term effect. Over the course of extended use, the skin ages prematurely and results in wrinkles and sagging not to mention the greatly increased risk of various forms of skin cancer.

On average, the amount of damage cause by the UV rays are more profound than sun bathing since tanning bed users tend to try and speed up the tanning process by increasing the intensity and using tanning drugs as tanning accelerators to make the skin more sensitive to the rays.

These tanning accelerating drugs contain chemicals that are not FDA approved for the quantities used as tanning agents. Yet the manufacturers and advertisers push these products to consumers who may be unaware of the risks.

As with everything a person encounters in life, it is important to educate ourselves about the pros and cons of any decision we make. Those looking to use a tanning bed need to be aware of the risk and the precautionary practices they should follow.

There are safer sunless tanning alternatives that are much safer and do not cause long term health risks. Many health associations do recommend the use of DHA based tanning lotions, which do not interact with any part of the body beyond the top layer of your skin which consists of dead skin cells.
