The Evolution Of Gloves, And Their Contemporary Use

Since the earlier times, gloves have been used by people in their daily lives. Today, these hand coverings with separate sections for each fingers and the thumb that extends part way up the arm as defined by the Merriam-Webster are now available in various types and designs such as leather gloves and mittens which depends on their purpose of use.

As was aforementioned, gloves have a rich history. The term “glove” was known to be first used before the 12th Century and was derived from the Middle English word “glof”. Who invented them has always been unknown. But history has it that these items were first worn by cavemen as a form of protection to their hands when performing awkward or uncomfortable task. Their early forms resembled crude mittens-that is, a glove with fingers and a gauntlet covering the forearm.

Over the years that followed, gloves have been used for a host of other purposes. Royalties and dignitaries of England, for example, wore jeweled and embroidered fabric and leather gloves as a badge of distinction after the Norman Conquest. For nearly 800 years, it became custom in England to use them to challenge personal battle. By the 14th Century, gloves were widely used by upper-classmen. By the 16th Century, they were recognized women fashionable by the queen consort of Henry II of France, Catherine de Mdicis. Today, they come in a multitude of styles and types depending on the purpose of their use.

Generally, this hand covering is divided in six categories. First are the winter gloves, which as their name implies, are being used during winter season. During this season, hand coverings are necessary to protect the hands from too much cold. Second category is the industrial glove. Unlike the winter gloves which are used to fight against cold, it is heat resistant. Other styles of industrial gloves which are primarily used in industrial sites are demolition style, cryogenic, metal guard, and utility styles. Used in sports activities are the third category; popular sports gloves include baseball, cycling, hockey and baseball gloves.

As abovementioned, gloves have been used and considered as fashion items. Prominent people who were fond of using gloves are Queen Elizabeth I who had a collection of hand coverings displayed in the Ashmoleum museum and King of Pop Michael Jackson and his Swarovski studded gloves. These are called stylish gloves. Then, there comes the white gloves which are often seen used in restaurants and hotels by staff to show class and utility. Finally, we have the general gloves which are used for various purposes. These type includes oven mitts.

Hand gloves, as abovementioned, has been a part of many culture in the world. They were adored by other people for their different purpose. And today, their importance in the society is somehow still seen.
