The 3 W’s – Tips For Quitting Smoking Naturally
The three tips for quitting smoking naturally presented here are not intended to get you over every rough period that you will experience along the way. They are merely presented to get you as prepared as possible for whatever comes along the way. It is a difficult experience to go through, but it is much cheaper and more effective than trying to quit with nicotine replacement products.
First, ask yourself “Why?” Why are you really doing this? Get past the superficial reasons such as your spouse wants you to and really dig deep here.
For example, instead of saying it could give you cancer say that you want to live long enough to watch your daughter walk down the aisle and hold your grandchildren. That’s a personal reason to quit that has the power to motivate you when things get hard.
When is the second W. Is right now a good time to do this? There will never be a really great time to give up the cigarettes, but you don’t want to time it during an unusually stressful or emotional time of your life. That could set you up for failure unless you believe the nature of those emotions will spur you to keep with it even more.
The third W is “what if.” You need to have some alternative behaviors in place so start asking yourself what if questions. What if you are at work and something stressful happens and you really want a drag? What if your girlfriend leaves you? What if you come home alone one afternoon and the urge just hits?
Be prepared as possible for times when the cravings are most likely to hit. Write down your alternatives and be ready to follow through with them during rough moments.
You may decide to go for a walk after dinner instead of lighting up as usual or take your kids to the park as a distraction on weekends. Other ideas are to exercise, talk on the phone, or take up a new hobby that keeps your hands busy.
