Tanning and Pregnancy
The course of pregnancy is known to take along several woes with it. There are countless do’s and don’ts that pregnant women need to follow diligently. Knowing what to eat, when to eat, a method to walk and the like are few of such things that women have to take care of. Another thing that is increasingly becoming a cause of concern for many is tanning.
There are a few pregnant ladies who need to get a tan but are worried by the safety of tanning while carrying a child. There are some studies that confirm that tanning is not harmful for pregnant women. However, experts warn against selecting tanning during pregnancy. The truth, like in most cases lies somewhere between the 2.
Sun tanning is safe when pregnant. Quite in sharp relief to what many of us believe, the UV rays or other sun’s rays are unable to penetrate to deeper layers of the skin and harm the fetus. Instead, sunlight has effects on only the epidermis and the dermis.
So it wouldn’t be not be not right to opine that pregnant girls can easily undergo the tanning process. However, there is again a catch here. Though tanning may not have any harmful complications on the fetus, it can have other flipsides when it comes to overall health in some way or the other.
Relaxing in the sun may be ideal for getting a tan but it could also dehydrate the body substantially. In extreme cases, dehydration can lead to several severe health issues for the fetus such as damaged abdominal walls, heart and backbone. Due to this, mavens advocate drinking adequate amounts of water before lying down in the sun.
Further on, the skin has a bent to turn sensitive while pregnant. So, pregnant women are at a greater risk of developing hives and rashes. Also, pregnant women are more susceptible to cholasma which is dark splotches on the face.
With all this, tanning can’t be characterized as one hundred percent safe during pregnancy. To be on the safer side, it would be better that you skip tanning all together. However, if you seriously need the sun kissed look, you can think about using sunless tanning products like sunless tanning wipes and the like. These tanning products don’t show you to harmful UV rays and are much safer.
If you’re still insistent on going in for sun tanning, it is a good idea to do so with extreme care and caution. The most simple thing that you can do in this direction is to make sure that the time for which you lie down in the sun is not for prolonged periods. Besides drink a lot of water to avoid dehydration. One thing that you can not afford to miss upon is sunscreen. Use it in good amounts to avert rashes and sunburns.
Also ensure that you find the opinion of the doctor before you commence with your tanning activities. You may for sure not want any kind of hazards that will impact your developing baby’s health.
