Mermaids of World Myth

Mermaids are well known mythical creatures that have the upper-half of a woman with the lower-half of a fish. They are imbedded in our modern day culture but are still apart of peoples belief. Traditionally Mermaids were believed to live in underwater palaces of magnificent splendour and live a luxurious life. They are very beautiful and are usually seen out at sea combing their hair or signing. They use their most wonderful voice to sing sweet music which lures sailors towards them. When the sailors are close enough to the Mermaid, the creatures attitude changes quickly and her she lashes out grabbing her victim and trapping them in cages in her underwater chambers. Mermaids were thus feared by many a sailor. It was believed that even the sight of a Mermaid was a dark omen for death and at the very least would bring bad luck.

(This is a copy of a talk that was given at an “Art Salon” sponsored by the National Psychological Association for Psychoanalysis on October 17th, 2010, in N.Y. The event involved Art Exhibits by both Michael Robbins, M.A., L.M.H.C., and his father Arthur Robbins, Ed.D., who is one of the founders of the Expressive Therapy movement. Father and son each talked about their relationship to art and therapy. Afterwards, the audience participated with them in a lively dialogue on the subject.)

A Day In The Area Close to Ypres

Brandhoek Cemetery is the place where Captain Noel Chavasse was laid to rest. Captain Chavasse is one of just three men to have been granted Britain’s top medal for bravery, the Victoria Cross. In addition, he was also accorded the Military Cross. I’m presently reading a book entitled “In Foreign Fields” by Dan Collins and it is about troops who have been granted medals in Afghanistan and Iraq. When you realise exactly what a soldier needed to achieve in order to be accorded an MC, it truly makes you comprehend what a bold man Capt Chavasse was especially as he was a member of the Royal Medical Corps and never fired a shot during the war.
