Successfully Winning A College Athletic Scholarship

by

The high school athlete that would like to go on to college but just doesnt have the money may want to consider applying for college athletic scholarships. A college athletic scholarship can help them to obtain the education they desire, as well as continuing to participate in the sport they adore. Nevertheless, the athlete must be ready to market themselves in order to earn the scholarship to the university they want to go to.

One of the first steps you need to take to properly market yourself to win a college athletic scholarship is to create your resume. Your resume should highlight your strengths and is no different than one you would send in to an employer. Instead of highlighting your work experience, you will highlight your athletic prowess and your pursuit of an education. List all of the awards and certificates you have earned in your high school career and be sure to keep it updated.

When you apply for scholarships, you want to be sure to include your SAT scores and your high school transcript. They will not just want to see how well you did on the SAT scores. They will want to see the grades you received and the specific classes you have taken. While they want your athletic information, they also want to make certain that you would fit into their college and make sure that you would receive the education you desire.

It is also a good idea to prepare a video recording to market yourself to the schools you are applying to. The video tape should show them exactly who you are and your skills in the sport. But, do not stop there. If your high school coach and teachers are willing, have them take part in your video, as well. This will give the coach a better understanding of what a great addition you will make to the college team and how well you will fit in. However, do not include this in your package. Instead, include a statement on your resume that a video is available upon request.

The most frequent mistake of high school students is trying to market themselves to win a college athletic scholarship too early. When is the right time to contact a coach? Never contact anyone until the student’s Junior year of high school. The first two years of high school should be used to advance their athletic skills. The Junior year is the perfect time to market yourself, as it will give the coaches plenty of time to contact you and determine whether or not you are the right student for their college.
