A good portrait image beats the convention and is able to catch moods and perspectives of a person like never seen before. However, regular family or one-person portraits are also clicked and they are fit for family albums.

An appropriate upclose shot bringing the person’s face into prominence distinguishes a truly expert portrait photograph from an amateur one. This can be achieved by making use of a setting in the camera that makes the background slightly hazy and blurred so as to place the face more in focus. A camera with a broader aperture can achieve this perfect tuning between the background and the foreground image. One the other hand, it is better to shoot with a normal aperture if focus on the background is as essential as on the person, which is mostly true in outdoor photography.

However, However, portrait photographs clicked in studios under regulated lighting mostly come out better than those clicked outside.

Another important factor that determines a good portrait photograph is the comfort level of the subject when he or she presents for the image. The human element in photography is so vital that all technical efforts will fail to make it a good portrait if the subject is cold and feeling awkward before the camera.
