Pregnancy Often Comes With Sleep Challenges

January 22, 2010 by

A woman’s body undergoes many incredible changes when she becomes pregnant and some of those are surprising at first. Many women are shocked to learn of the many different and uncomfortable side-effects of experiencing pregnancy. Many people joke about not sleeping when the child is born, but being pregnant brings its own host of sleeping issues. Usually women expect to be inconvenienced by trying to sleep with a growing belly, but there may be lots of other unexpected sleep issues.

Charley Horses: Calf muscle cramps may occur at any time during the pregnancy, but they are most common in the third trimester. Changes in nutritional needs, dehydration and the quick weight gain of becoming pregnant can often be reasons for nighttime leg cramps. There are many cures for calf cramps, but be sure to check with your primary care professional before using them. Many expectant women suffer from these painful nighttime calf cramps.

Heartburn issues: The stomach and other internal organs are being squeezed together to make room for the expanding baby and that pressure commonly impacts the digestive system the most. Pregnant women may not always be able to get much relief from heartburn and constipation problems because some medications designed to relieve these symptoms are not pregnancy safe. It’s no surprise that some women should have issues with digestion during pregnancy.

Frequent urination issues: Nearly all expecting women experience a growing need to urinate much more frequently than they are used to. There is some debate over how much being pregnant contributes to nocturnal enuresis.Pressure against the bladder and added pressure on the kidneys can cause some women to urinate three to six times each night. Many expecting women suffer through 1 or more random nighttime bed wetting episodes during their pregnancy.

Various sleep issues will come and go during the length of a pregnancy, and not all women have the same sleep challenges. Pregnant women should be ready for sleep issues by their doctors in advance. Some doctors advise expectant women to sleep with padding around them for comfort and to sleep on their left side to help avoid some of these sleep issues.

For most women being pregnant is a wonderful time, but it’s also important to pay special attention to your health. Speak regularly with your doctor if you have any of the above medical issues. There is help available for adult bed wetting.
