Giving indigestion relief consists of simple ways which can even be done at home. Indigestion or dyspepsia (medical term) is often described as a feeling of heaviness even before finishing a meal accompanied by tenderness in the upper part of the stomach or abdomen. Indigestion is more common to adults and may even occur once in a while or on a daily basis.

Causes of Indigestion

* Indigestion can be an underlying condition, better known as GERD or gastroesophageal reflux disease, peptic (stomach ulcers), cancers or issues with the pancreas and/or bile ducts. As the root cause of indigestion improves, so does the overall health of the patient suffering from indigestion.

* Indigestion can be idiopathic or an uncomforting feeling that has no definitive known cause. If this is the issue, indigestion is known as functional dyspepsia. In this situation, the condition is located where the stomach meets the small intestine.

Signs and symptoms of indigestion

* Feeling fuller than average.

* It is because there is a problem in the stomach’s motility causing food stasis and eventually back flow of contents.

* Epigastric pain is also a common symptom. It can be mild to severe.

* Other manifestations are nausea and vomiting, heartburn, belching, acidic taste, and abdominal tenderness. Stress can aggravate the symptoms.

Diagnosis

* A physical examination will be performed by a doctor

* X-rays, blood, breath or stool tests may be conducted to diagnose indigestion.

* For severe cases of indigestion, an upper edoscopy may be performed on the patient to check for abnormalities not found on other test indicators. If need be, the doctor may remove tissue.

* If your indigestion worsens for longer than two weeks, seek advice from a doctor.

* If you experience other symptoms such as vomiting, hemoptysis, weight loss, anorexia, melena, dysphagia, shortness of breath, excessive sweating, and pain that radiates to the jaw, neck, or arm, seek medical help.

At home remedies for indigestion

* Modify the way you eat for a better absorption and digestion of food.

* Avoid rigorous activity after eating a meal.

* Chew your food completely.

* Do not talk while eating.

* Wait at least two hours after eating before engaging in strenuous exercise.

* Avoid stress as this may worsen the symptoms and indigestion as a whole.
