Sienna X: Fake Tanning And How It Works

By applying certain chemicals to one’s skin an individual can produce a “tanned” look similar to the inhabitants of warmer countries like Spain and Italy. This procedure is known as spray or fake tanning. It gained popularity during the 20th century when sun beds were popular and regular tanning was being associated with severe health risks. Unlike the sun-bed method, spray tanning requires the use of lotions or sprays to create the overall brown appearance. These lotions contain a chemical ingredient known as dihydroxyacetone or DHA. This substance was discovered in the late 1920s by German scientists when the DHA accidentally spilt on their skin and left it brown.
DHA works in conjunction with an individual’s skin layers. There are two primary layers, the epidermis and the dermis. The epidermis is then divided into further layers. Fake tan lotion, such as Sienna X, works on the outer layer of the epidermis which is known as the stratum corneum or horny layer. When the tanning lotion or spray is applied to the skin the DHA begins to react. The oxygen within the air reacts to the amino acid in the DHA and a browning of the skin occurs.
As with regular tans, the fake tan or spray tan fades in a few days as well (unless you live in a warm country such as Spain). A fake tan will usually last between 5-7 days. The fading occurs due to the flaking of dead skin cells from the outer epidermis. In fact, every individual develops an entirely new epidermis every 40-45 days.
