Qi Gong: A Healing Practice

by

Many people who practice the ancient exercise of qi gong began doing so because they wanted to improve their health and also maintain vitality into their old age. Still others begin the practice to improve their self awareness and to realize their full potential as a human being. Qi Gong differs from other exercise regimes because it lacks the adverse impact on the body by focusing on gentle movements. While other activities take a toll on the body, the practice of Qi Gong improves flexibility and mobility without placing stress on the joints and muscles.

The practice of Qi Gong results in a lot of health benefits, among them heart health by means of lowered blood pressure. Medical studies also suggest that the practice can fortify the human immune system and have a positive effect on the vivacity of the participant. The historic practitioners did so to maximize life span and to avert many serious diseases and disorders.

Many of today’s health conditions are the result of constant stress. Qi Gong helps to lower this level of stress through breathing and movement, thereby decreasing the chances of getting a stress associated illness or injury. The practice can result in a clarity of mind that can help with depression and other mental illnesses. The techniques of focus produced in Qi Gong can relieve the practitioner of anxiety and improve emotional well being.

Qi Gong develops a quiet mind in the student. Even mainstream medicine has begun to acknowledge and awaken to the power of positive thinking and clear headedness when it comes to remaining healthy and free from illness, both mental and physical. While the East has long accepted the connection between mind and body, this knowledge is now just beginning to reach Western shores.

The Chinese consider that there is a natural energy flow within the body andname this energy flow as Qi, pronounced “chee”. This energy is believed to flow along channels or meridians that might be pictured as rivers running through the body. The practice of Qi Gong helps to move the energy along these channels and equips the mind to send energy where it is most needed to improve strength and to facilitate healing.
