Your fishing rod should be a minimum of six feet in length. It should be a medium action rod. Remember, that longer rods make it easier to land a big fish.

Choose a spin casting or spinning reel. The reel needs to have a good drag. It should hold up to 120 yards of fishing line. Most carp anglers use twelve pound test line.

Carp anglers use hooks from size 2 to 6. Since you will be fishing in a catch and release program, hooks should be without barbs. The particular lake where you fish may have specific rules on the hooks that can be used, so be sure that you check before you go.

When fishing for carp, remember that they will drop the bait at the slightest of resistance. For this reason, fishing corks are not generally used and only split shot or slip sinkers should be used to weight your line. This will help you to be more successful in your fishing.

Since there are no bobbers used, some anglers use a small piece of Styrofoam that is slit placed over the line between the first guide of the rod and the reel. The reel is left open so that the line is free. Styrofoam that hits the guide will be knocked off to get your attention.
