Organic Herbicide Is Effective Crabgrass Killer

August 9, 2009 by

Your lawn just does not need crabgrass thriving in it. However, it seems like it always finds a way to your lawn and this happens every year. Come July and August, these months seem to be the best time for them to grow and that is when you discover them on your lawn. You can now stop dreading these months because you can actually do something to stop them from growing back.

A crabgrass killer that works is one of your tasks. But there is a little secret that I would like to share with you regarding this. Experts say that preventing them from growing back is the best way and you can do that to your lawn.

The first prevention method is proper watering. It is important to train your lawns root system to delve deep into the soil. This is typically 10. You can do this by watering 10 of moist soil only as needed. You can check the depth by probing the soil with a screwdriver. If you can push it down 10 without much effort, and some soil sticks to the probe, you know youve watered sufficiently.

To water only as needed means to wait until the soil is dry. This keeps the moisture down deep where the grass roots can access them, but not up high where potential crabgrass can access it. Even though you may think differently, even annoying weeds such as crabgrass need water to survive.

Mowing long is the next method. This means that you should make sure your lawn is at most 2 1/2″ to 3″ only. This method allows any other plants to thrive and make their way there.

Come May, you should apply some pre-emergence herbicide so as to stop any weeds from growing. Crabgrass is an annual weed that comes around summer and start growing when the temperature of the soil are at least in their 60s. So applying the herbicide will depend on the temperature in your area. The thing to keep in mind is to make sure that you apply it before the weeds start growing so that it will be effective against it (it usually takes 90 to 120 days).

Those crabgrass seems to still have made their way to your lawn? Cheer up. The market holds a variety of post-emergent herbicides which will work on annual summer weeds like crabgrass. Apply them and let it do its work.

Keep in mind that if you take out crabgrass this time, you will be getting less in the following years. You can cut them short so that no seeds will spread on your lawn. Keep doing this and you will find yourself one day looking at your lawn crabgrass-free.
