<p>As you will see, we as humans have the same automatic responses to our environment. Which surprises people, even though it shouldn&#8217;t. After all, we share a lot of our DNA with other creatures, you we should expect to share the same kind of responses at least some of the time.</p>
<p>Maybe you do not know why you react the way you do to certain situations, then again, maybe you do. All of us have memories and feelings associated with those memories. Of course, they are not all good; but, they are not all bad either. The goal of NLP Anchoring is learning new associations with stimuli.</p>
<p>While experiencing the situation that makes you uncomfortable, think of NLP Anchoring; focus on a memory that gives you positive feelings. Keep focusing on that memory until the undesired feelings subside. Perform this exercise repeatedly until your mind automatically associates the positive feelings with the event.</p>
<p>Another exercise in the NLP Anchoring process is to associate touch with a positive feeling. Maybe there is a certain gesture or even a certain spot on your body, finger, hair or hand, which you can learn to connect positive feelings to. Then, when you start feeling the negative feelings, you can touch that area to help you bring about positive feelings.</p>
<p>What about knowing that a certain situation or person is going to make you experience unwelcomed feelings? NLP Anchoring addresses this issue as well. Identify the situation or person, when the undesirable feelings appear, think of a time when you had good feelings. Keep doing this until you are able to think of the person, place or thing without experiencing the bad feelings.</p>

<p>The first step, though, is deciding that you are ready to change. Without a willingness to accept that many of your problems are caused by the way you think, you are going to get limited use out of NLP therapy. NLP seeks to help you change, but if you are unreceptive to the ideas and methodology behind it, there is little anyone can do. The change first starts with you.</p>
<p>Set Goals:</p>
<p>The first step in NLP therapy is to set achievable goals keeping in mind exactly what you hope to accomplish. Don&#8217;t be vague. Wanting to improve your life isn&#8217;t the answer you&#8217;re looking for you. You have to know exactly what you need to improve your life &#8211; what needs to change, what needs to stay the same, what needs to be added and what needs to be removed are all questions you need to ask yourself at this time. For this reason, setting goals may take longer and be more involved than you expected, but it is necessary if you want to see real results.</p>
<p>When you have answered the questions posed above it is time to state your goals. Leave the negativity at the door here. Phrase your goals in a positive way. You almost must be able to see, hear, feel, taste or touch the results. In other words, you must be able to have tangible results. This way you can test your results and physically experience your achievements. Make this easier by visualizing your results as you set your goals. Imagine all aspects of that goal and achieving it. You also have to be responsible for keeping track of your results yourself. This is important because you don&#8217;t want your progress to depend on someone else. Also be sure the result does not limit you in any way. The goal of NLP is opening yourself up to choice and option. Do not set a goal that robs you of either of those things.</p>
<p>Awareness</p>
<p>Awareness is of vital importance. Setting a goal is of little help if you can&#8217;t tell whether or not you progressing. You have to be able to see the progress in yourself but also, be able to read your progress in the people you interact with. Read them carefully for their reaction to you and watch to see if it is changing as it should be. You should be able to see positive changes in the way they interact with you. The great thing about NLP is it shows you how to do that as well.</p>

It was developed in the early 1970s based on the idea that there is a strong connection between internal thoughts and dialogue &#8211; beliefs and values &#8211; and external behavior and the general quality of a person&#8217;s life.</p>

<p>To really understand the basics of NLP, one need look no further than the title &#8211; Neuro, of the brain, Linguistic, pertaining to language and speech, and programming, trained thoughts or behaviors programmed into our minds. These programs affect every part of our life and we need to correct those programs to make positive changes in our lives.</p>
<p>Neuro-Linguistic Programming began with the belief that there are certain trigger words and phrases a therapist can recognize in a patients speech to help effect change in a patients behavior. NLP practitioners believe that by helping to identify these words and phrases, they can help &#8216;deprogram&#8217; patients by testing the deletions, distortions and generalizations in a patients responses. When a patient gives an NLP practitioner an answer that relies on generalizations &#8211; such as, &#8220;I feel depressed&#8221; &#8211; instead of a full answer &#8211; &#8220;I feel depressed because&#8221; &#8211; the practitioner recognized this and challenges it with targeted questioning &#8211; &#8220;Why specifically do you feel depressed?&#8221; &#8220;What happened to make you feel depressed?&#8221; &#8220;When did you start feeling depressed?&#8221; These target questions are designed to break through the patients&#8217; mental blocks and allow them to see the real problem clearly &#8211; to realize it, and then change it. These mental blocks are at the core of the NLP methodology.</p>
<p>By breaking through those self-imposed mental blocks, NLP helps both the practitioner and the patient have a deeper understanding of the root cause of the problem &#8211; in this case, depression. People naturally build these mental blocks through past experiences, beliefs and values that have developed over time. For this reason, it can be difficult to get through them as they mind seeks to protect them using the language we use and the words we use to respond to challenging questions. That is the reason we are more likely to say &#8220;I feel depressed&#8221; or &#8220;I am depressed&#8221; as opposed to choosing an answer that tells the listener why we are feeling that way.</p>
<p>NLP practitioners can identify the problem with the targeted questions we discussed earlier and isolate the program that is causing the feeling. Sometimes there is a specific trigger. What that trigger is will be different for different people. The goal in NLP is to uncover that trigger and use anchoring, perceptual positions, reframing, representational systems or sub-modalities to change the way the patient reacts to that trigger.</p>

There are even several psychotherapists with private practices and many hypnotherapists who employ the methodology behind NLP.</p>

<p>NLP seeks to change the programming we have in our brains that causes us to react negatively to certain triggers. The belief is that those triggers are really memories or learned behaviors from the subconscious mind that are impacting our emotions. By reprogramming these memories with something positive &#8211; a calming color or sight, a happy memory or a pleasant tone of voice &#8211; we are thereby changing the way our brain interprets the trigger and changing the way we react. Sure there is little hard, scientific data to back up the claims made by NLP and NLP practitioners but when carefully considered, the theories posed by the method make sense.</p>
<p>There has to be some reason Patient A and Patient B react to things like dogs, snakes or spiders differently. They could have grown up next door to each other, spent their entire childhoods together and came from the same basic background. We&#8217;ll say, for arguments sake that they were both from middle class, average families with one sibling two years older and one sibling two years younger, and both parents still married &#8211; one parent worked, the other stayed home and for the argument&#8217;s sake again, will say it was the same parent at home in both families. They got similar grades in school and both had the same friends. Yet somehow, despite nearly identical childhoods, Patient A is terrified of dogs and Patient B is a dog lover. How does this happen?</p>
<p>According to NLP, it is likely that Patient A was bitten by a dog or had a bad experience with a dog, or someone in their family had a fear of dogs and displayed it in from of them. In either case, it is probable Patient A has no memory of this experience because it may have happened when they were too young to remember. That doesn&#8217;t matter to the brain though. The subconscious mind remembers this and triggers the fear reaction every time Patient A sees a dog.</p>
<p>Patient A wants to solve this problem because Patient B is a close friend and, yes, has a four legged friend of their own. Patient A just wants to be able to visit Patient B without having a panic attack at the thought of seeing the dog. Patient A turns to an NLP practitioner to get help.</p>
<p>The NLP practitioner is going to try to get to the root cause of Patient A&#8217;s phobia. Together, they discover that Patient A did in fact have a bad experience which programmed into Patient A&#8217;s mind that dogs are bad news and should be avoided. The NLP practitioner will now set about trying to reformat that program by changing the reaction the brain has to dogs. They will do this by reprogramming the brain so when Patient A sees a dog, a pleasant reaction is triggered; allowing Patient A and Patient B to have pleasant visits without the panic attacks.</p>

<p>NLP practitioners actively listen to your answers to questions targeted at uncovering the root of your phobia. The cause of that fear is likely a traumatic event that happened when you were too young to remember or had the fear of dogs instilled in you by a parent or guardian who had the same fear. These memories take seed in our subconscious minds &#8211; becoming similar to programs &#8211; and turn into phobias.</p>
<p>Now you&#8217;ve discovered your phobia of dogs comes from an early memory your brain is conjuring up &#8211; even though you&#8217;re not aware of it &#8211; when you see or hear dogs. This is happening because to that negative program, Factor A (the dog) plus Factor B (you) equals Outcome C (the dog is going to bite you or maul you or something of that nature in most dog phobias). The problem with that is, A plus B doesn&#8217;t always equal C. What needs to be done here, is a reformatting of that program.</p>
<p>The NLP practitioner will work with you to help anchor the trigger &#8211; dogs &#8211; with a more pleasant association. Instead of that negative programmed memory making you feel fear and panic, the sight of dogs will be reprogrammed to bring to mind a calming tone of voice, a color that makes you relax or a place you find comforting. You may never love dogs enough to own one, but you may just be able to brush one when you visit a friend with a pooch of their own.</p>
