Nighthawk Carbon Monoxide Alarms Could Save Your Families Life

February 16, 2010 by

Why do you have car insurance? So that in the unforeseen circumstances that you need help you can get it. It is exactly the same with Carbon Monoxide Detectors, although they are much cheaper than car insurance.

Most people never give any thought to Carbon Monoxide poisoning, it is a gas that is invisible and has no smell, so you don’t see any physical implications of it in your house. Which is very different to fire of course, this does not make CO any less deadly though.

When there is a case of Carbon Monoxide poisoning there are no TV crews filming fire engines trying to control the flames, there are just shots of ambulances taking the bodies away. That may sound dramatic but it really is that deadly.

Smoke alarms and CO detectors are not the same thing, you do not need to have a fire for there to be enough carbon monoxide in the house to kill everyone present in the home. It can be hard to understand how something that has no smell and is invisible can be so deadly, but there are over 200,000 visits to hospital every year from it.

All too often by the time you start to think that maybe the fact that your whole family is suddenly feeling sick at the exact same time is something more than the flu it is well on the way towards being too late. Having an alarm that alerts you to a build up of CO gas gives you time, time to open windows and doors to get fresh air in, time to call the emergency services and most importantly time to get out.

It is pretty safe to say that everyone takes smoke alarms for granted now while carbon monoxide alarms are still reasonably new. Just because your parents didn’t have them in their house it doesn’t mean it isn’t a good idea for you to have them. If you are unsure how necessary they are, talk to your local fire chief and ask him what he thinks or maybe speak to a emergency medic who has had to go into a home where the occupants are all dead from CO poisoning.
