Dogs have long been notorious as “man’s best friend. They do make tremendous companions and magnificent family pets. But to be a decent doggy citizen and a magnificent family pet they need to be well trained.
You will need to start training your puppy for obedience as soon as he arrives home. After about a year you can expect that your puppy will be in effect “fully trained” but you will still need to work with him throughout his life in order to keep his skills sharp. Well-trained dogs are a delight to own and most people enjoy being around a good dog.
The number one tenet of dog training is that you must be the “alpha dog”. Some people may not like that word but the reality is that dogs are pack animals and they expect to have a leader. You must be the leader and all of the human being members of your family unit must outrank your dog in the pack order. Dogs will do anything for the leader of the pack so that must be you.
Your dog must never be allowed to show dominance. He needs to wait to eat until after you have finished eating. This is a subtle but very essential thing when it comes to establishing domination. He must never be permitted to jump on you or other people either.
Do not ever allow your puppy to do things that you will not allow him to do as an adult dog. This includes jumping and nipping at you. One of the most key things in training a dog is constancy. A dog cannot infer like a human and he will not understand that it is all right to jump on you in your play clothes but not in your business suit. He also won’t realize why he could do something as a puppy but he can’t carry on to do it as an adult dog. Be consistent.
Using a crate will make all of your training easier. Dogs feel protected and secure in a cozy and comfy place that they deem their own. In the beginning your puppy may complain in the crate but if you just leave him in there he will grow to like it. Using a crate will make housetraining and obedience training easier.
It is very important for your dog’s wellbeing that he knows how to sit and stay. You must be able to be in command of your dog at specific times and he must be yielding with your guidelines in order to avoid troubles like running off and jumping all over the visitors that come to your house.
You will most likely also want to train your dog to walk on a leash and to heal and after the basics you can move on to the entertaining things like fetching. Well-trained dogs make the best pets so be a responsible pet owner and teach your dog well.
