Making Resume Formats Simple

July 12, 2009 by

Although it can be very helpful to look at sample resumes and read about the latest trends online, do not get caught up in the different resume formats. If the information you write is concise and to the point, yet offers the right amount of details, the particular format you use will not even matter.

First of all it is important to consider that no resume formats are written in stone. Any format you see can be adapted to suit your needs. You can even combine two different formats.

You should also understand that you are not going to be offered a job based on the format of your resume alone. However, if your resume is not formatted well and is difficult to read, it can actually prevent you from getting a job. The most important component of your resume is the section which lists your previous jobs and the tasks you performed or skills you demonstrated.

There are many job seekers who select a format for their resume based on personal circumstances. In particular job seekers who have never worked at any one company for a considerable amount of time may be concerned potential employer will think they are not capable of keeping a job so they might opt for a functional format resume. On the other hand job seekers who have really taken measures to work their way up in their careers may prefer a chronological format.

In conclusion do not allow resume formats to dictate your resume. Never leave out information that is important or include information that is not relevant just because a particular format calls for certain types of information. This can actually prevent you from getting a great job.
