Recessed lighting fixtures should not be placed very near to each other and also do not place them in a straight row. This might look a bit awkward in a room. Usually, 4-inch fixtures should be placed at least 4 feet apart and 6-inch fixtures should be placed about 6 feet apart.

Place the recessed lighting fixtures about 12 to 18 inches in front of the object you wish to light like a painting or a bookshelf. Recessed lights used for reading or task lighting should be carefully placed overhead so your head and shoulders will not block needed light.
