Learning The Sunshine Coast History

There are many fabulous areas in the Sunshine Coast region, that will offer you some insight on the history of the area, as well as the culture and the way of it’s people. The Abbey is an internationally acclaimed museum of Art and Archaeology. Located in Caboolture, this museum houses a priceless collection. This museum has two distinct sections, one being the Western Europe Modern History section. The pieces there range from Britain’s collections to Greek and Egyptian artifacts. There is a gift shop which offers many unique souvenirs to take home.
The Caboolture Historical village offers a variety of shops in it’s seventy local buildings. There are many crafting shops as well as a barber shop and a school teachers cottage. You can also shop for household items like old milk cans, washboards or telephones. There are many old fashioned tea rooms and even a miniature train to take you on a tour of the village.
For those interested in aviation, there is the Caboolture Warplane and flight Museum. This museum is dedicated to the preservation of aviation history and houses a large collection of WWII memorabilia. All of the aircraft are restored and are in flying condition and regularly perform in air shows and aviation events. There are many aviation adventures available with flights in many of these historic planes.
The Landsborough Museum boasts the largest display of social history items in the Sunshine Coast region. It is housed in what was the Lands borough Shire Council Chambers and the collection contains a diverse range of items used in the local area throughout the 19the and 20the centuries. There are collections from intrepid explorers, pioneering farmers, seafarers and aboriginal people. There are also technological items such as early medical equipment, early communication equipment and photographic equipment which all feature in the main exhibition.
The Valley Rattler Steam Train. On board you can explore and enjoy the scenic Mary Valley, traveling thorough spectacular countryside over the Mary River, past pineapple plantations and timber gorges. The stream locomotive is a fully restored miniature of a 1920s steam train and you can lunch at one of the local cafes along the way or stop at the heritage town of Gympie and visit the Railway Hotel for something more substantial.
