Labradoodle puppies for sale are beautiful, comical, intelligent, and sociable, great family dogs. Developed in Australia somewhere around 1989, a Labrador and a Poodle were mated to create an intelligent hybrid with the social skills of a guide dog and the hypoallergenic coat of the Poodle.
Most are low shedding, making for an allergy-friendly companion. It took several litters from the original pairings to produce 1 truly hypoallergenic puppy. Today, most are allergy-friendly, a few are truly hypoallergenic. Until the adult coat is in, you can’t be sure. If allergies are a major concern, consult with a reputable breeder before purchasing your puppy.
As yet there are no official standards in physical looks or temperament. Several Labradoodle clubs do keep genealogies of dogs registered with them. As a new crossbreed, temperament and characteristics that dominate can vary greatly. Most are still bred from Poodles and Labs, but some breeders are mating Labradoodles with Labradoodles, producing ‘Double Doodles’. Or a Labradoodle may be bred with a Lab or a Poodle. The original Australian Labradoodle has since been crossbred with Retrievers and Spaniels to produce a more consistent temperament.
There are 3 sizes of Labradoodles, standard, medium, and mini. Standards stand 22 to 26 inches tall and weigh 50-65 pounds. The medium is 18-21 inches tall weighing 30-45 pounds. The mini is 14-17 inches tall weighing 16-25 pounds. Coat color is solid or parti-color, a primary color with some patches of other shades. There are many colors available, any color that a poodle can be seen in, chocolate, cream, gold, apricot, red, black, silver, chalk, and more.
There are 3 hair types, wool, fleece, and hair. The curlier the coat, the more likely the dog is hypoallergenic. The curly coat is called wool, wavy is called fleece, and the straight coat is called hair. Most Australian Labradoodles are bred with either fleece or wool coats. Labradoodles need regular brushing to keep their coats from matting.
For best temperament, choose a puppy raised in a home environment, the beginning of the socialization process. While you’re interviewing the breeder, the breeder will be interviewing you. You want to know the background of the puppy you’re thinking of purchasing. The breeder wants to know the puppy is going to a loving, responsible owner who can provide a forever home.
To determine the temperament of Labradoodle puppies for sale, visit with the parents. Even more important than inborn temperament is early training and socialization. A gentle, easy to train dog will become a monster if allowed to run amok. A timid or a stubborn dog can be a gentle, loving family pet if pack leadership is established early, and the dog is well-socialized by positive exposure to people, pets, and new places.
