Producing Innovative Magic Tricks With Traditional Methods

January 22, 2010 by

Everyday there are new magic tricks selling in the market. To tell you the truth, many of them are produced using one thousand year old methods. You too can produce an innovative magic effect by using old principles. For example, the old decanter trick is used to produce a handkerchief in a transparent decanter. We can change the appearance of the trick by switching the objects used in the effect. We could use a wine bottle instead of the decanter, or a rubber water bottle or anything else. We could produce a belt instead of a handkerchief, or anything that works. You can reproduce ten thousand new effect just by substituting the props.

However, good tricks are usually invented by more than merely switching of the objects involved. Take the Orrin’s Spider Web Trick as an example which in my opinion not only changed the outlook but actually improved the trick and bring it into more possibilities.

Notice that the thread is still used but that the background of the web helps to conceal both the thread and the pocket from which the card slides. Another important difference is that the movement of the thread is accomplished indirectly by spinning the web. That spider web trick is identical in basic principle to the old decanter trick. But Orrin substituted a card for the handkerchief. He substituted a disc decorated as a spider’s web in place of the table. The thread remained.

Orrin made an important change to the trick or even the principle by changing the moving part from the appearing object to the appearing location. He produced the card by moving the spider quickly. And moreover, he turned the web and let the thread to wrap around to produce the tension to pull the card. Originally, a hiding assistant or a counterweight is used as the driving tension. The magician pulled the thread himself by turning the web disc. This excellently covered the pulling action.

Orrin may not have been going through those steps to produce his famous spider web trick. But here we explain a possible way in which the reader can follow to change the old decanter trick into the new spider web trick.

Consider the steps in outline form: 1. The objects are changed-a card for a handkerchief, a spider for a decanter. 2. The place of appearance was changed in character. The original location was inside a transparent object. 3. The source of power was changed. Originally it came from a concealed assistant. Here the performer himself applied the Power-indirectly. 4. Instead of moving the appearing object rapidly, Orrin moves the place of appearance rapidly. 5. Absence of a suitable background originally made it necessary to do the trick at a distance. Here, a background that made the thread invisible moved the trick much closer to the spectator.

It seems a far cry from the old decanter trick to this spider’s web trick, but actually, as is evident here, they are very closely related.
