Installing Roof Flashing ?

December 18, 2009 by

One of the layers of roofing that ensures a leak-proof setup to the entire roof is known as flashing. The flashing is a leak-proof coating of the roof that prevents water from seeping into the internal structure of walls and ceilings.

Since valleys and the voids of the roof are the places susceptible to water accumulation and seepage, they’re equipped with the essential layer of flashing. Hence, it becomes quintessential to make way for such roof flashing when it comes to ensuring a leak-proof setting to your roof.

Start off the project by noting down the dimensions of the roof spread where the flashing would be installed. Walk down to a local hardware store and purchase the required flashing material. With the help of a utility knife or tin snips, cut out the appropriate length of flashing from the material.

Place the segment of flashing on the valley of the roof such that the centre of the sheet lies on the middle of the valley. Install the flashing in such a way that it covers the edges as well as the middle of the void. The line that joins the two sides of the roof is also covered by the flashing.

Bring a stapler and staple the flashing sheet to the underlying roof. However, the use of nails may not be suitable for the flashing as it could do potential damage to the material. Bring a fascia board to add an extra cover of protection to the roof.

To add an extra protection to the entire setup, use tar and spread it over the surface. Sometimes the voids and the valleys are left unattended after the application of flashing layer. The tar layer covers that aspect as well and ensures a stringent setting to the setup.

Take the shingles to the roof and nail down the fixture with the help of a hand-held hammer. The shingles need to be installed over the tar layer as they rigidify the structure and provides final touch to the framework. If some shingles are installed with a faulty setting then a pry bar tool can be used to remove the concerned shingle completely.

Test whether the assignment is accomplished or not. Observe water leaks or molds on the interior walls or ceilings after a heavy rainfall. No such problem seals the success of the assignment.
