How To Get The Diamond Weight Of Your Jewelry Pendants

by

There are few things more scary than buying expensive diamond jewelry pendants without fully knowing what the whole process is all about.

We use the universal standard Carat Weight to measure diamonds. One carat weighs 200 milligrams.

If a diamond is referred to as four grains, this also means that it is a one carat diamond.

“Carat”, as a word, is derived from the word carob. Yes, that’s right – it’s named after a bean that grows on a tree in the Med! Long ago, if a diamond were found to weigh the same as a carob bean, people would call it one carob, or one carat. In the Far East where Carob trees do not grow, however, they used rice to measure the weight of their diamonds.

If a diamond weighed four grains of rice, it was known as four grains or, as we know it to be in today’s world, one carat.

The majority of diamond purchases are for diamonds that are 1/3 of a carat.

If you are buying jewelry pendants with set or mounted diamonds, don’t forget that if you have more than one diamond set into the pendant, the jewelry tag will probably give the CTW or Carat Total Weight.

In other words, it does not indicate the carat weight of each stone in your jewelry pendants.

You should ask your jeweler for the exact total carat weight of the largest diamond in your jewelry pendant if you want to know exactly what it is that you are buying (recommended).

If you have no idea how much your diamond is worth, then you can pay to get it appraised. However, the appraisal may not be totally accurate.

Before arriving at the retailer, all diamonds will journey from the mine to the cutter and then the polisher. From there it goes on to an independent grading company. It then reaches the primary market. During that journey, passing through all those hands, things may have gotten a bit blurry.

You may be better off obtaining a certificate through GIA, the Gemological Institute of America. Give the information on the GIA certificate to a diamond expert and ask him or her to use a cutters guide to accurately determine what your diamond is truly worth.

I trust that this makes a few things a little clearer for you. Hopefully, now you can feel a great deal more confident when out shopping for those beautiful diamond jewelry pendants!
