How To Get Rid Of Molds In The Bathroom

Molds growing in the bathroom are not just disgusting looking but are also unhealthy. Molds need air, moisture, ambient temperature and organic substrates to grow. While there isn’t much you can do to get rid of air, you can ensure that your bathroom is always dry and well ventilated.
While most molds cause no disease in fit people, they do so in people who have weak immune systems. They cause less serious skin infections and also potentially fatal blood stream infections. Headache and allergy are however common in healthy people if these fungi produce a lot of spores and mycotoxins.
A bathroom that doesn’t have drains that allow free flow of water is very difficult to keep mold-free. This is because accumulating water increases the overall moisture content of the room while also retaining nutrients in the form of residual soap, oils and skin cells that fungi thrive on.
It is counterintuitive to stack a whole lot of toiletries, beauty tools and products in a place that is prone to getting wet. This is because you know that mold will naturally grow in wet places. Do as much as you can to keep the bathroom dry and this involves making sure that your drains aren’t clogged. Seek a plumber’s help if you can’t get rid of a clog.
Install an exhaust vent in your bathroom if you do not already have one and keep it on when you’re taking a shower. Do not turn it off immediately after the shower but wait for a while. This can also be supplemented with a dehumidifier to get rid of a good amount of moisture and steam.
Use detergent solution or bleach to thoroughly clean the all the crevices, sides, corners and surfaces in the bathroom. While detergent is safe to use without gloves and goggles, make sure you have these protective things while using bleach. Do not use bleach in conjunction with other cleaning solutions.
Molds can re-grow even after cleaning if spores are stuck to things like carpets. So remove carpets. Also leaky plumbing can increase the moisture content in the room and give molds more surface area to grow in. You must strip and replace deteriorated caulking as molds can also grow here.
Remodeling an old bathroom, installing solid piece fixtures instead of ones that have a lot of joints where moisture can accumulate, replacing old faucets with new ones and using fixtures that don’t need caulking or mortar can be very effective for discouraging molds.
