For eliminating hardness, ion exchange process is considered best in which sodium ion replaces calcium and magnesium ions from the hardness causing minerals to produce a mineral that does not cause hardness and makes water potable.
Resin tank in softener is prepared with minute beads of sodium ions. When hard water goes in this tank, the sodium ion immediately replaces calcium and magnesium. Softener control valve sends these calcium and magnesium ions to a brine tank. These ions are then used up by the brine tank and you get soft water.
We have two different kinds of softeners, first one is Automatic softeners and second one is Demand initiated regeneration (DIR). Automatic softener contains a timer that automatically controls the ion restoration process whereas in Demand initiated regeneration everything is already programmed and it works on the basis of water usage and requirement.
Instead of these mineral based softeners other softeners are also available in the market that uses charcoal filters or any other technology to remove hardness but all such softeners are costly than traditional ones.
Choosing a good water softener is very crucial for every person, he need to properly inspect the features of a softener and take one that completely satisfies his needs.
Selection of a softener also depends on amount of water used and in turn number of members in your family. Approximately 240 gallons of water are used in a family of 3 members and a gallon contains around 10 grains of hardness. So you need to take a softener that has efficiency to remove 2400 grains per day and work properly.
Hence, you need to select a softener that can be easily cleaned, conveniently handled and have sufficient warranty. You also need to check from where you are taking the softener means the brand name of your water softener should be good and it should be approved by government.
