How to Break in a Newly Purchased Baseball Glove

by

Congratulations on buying a brand new baseball glove! You quite possibly have realized by now that your brand new glove is probably really stiff and difficult to catch with. Do not get worried, as this is completely normal. Your new baseball glove has to be broken in to be ready to perform correctly and fit comfortably in a baseball game. While everyone has their own traditions and tips when it comes to breaking in a new baseball glove, here are several of the best ways I’ve discovered.

Simply Use It: This is more than likely the best way to soften up your brand new glove. Unfortunately, it also takes the longest time of any of the options shown here to get good results. Simply play catch along with another player daily for one or two weeks and your baseball glove will start to feel far more comfortable and will sooner or later be ready to play with in a game. If another player isn’t available, simply toss the soccer ball into your glove hand as hard as you can over and over again. Implement this method when there’s basically no hurry to begin playing with your new baseball glove.

Heat: Another way to soften up your glove some is to try using a form of heat. While there are a number of various techniques and approaches to breaking in your new glove with heat, many are unsafe and aren’t advised. A few of these include microwaving your baseball glove and warming it in the oven. These are not very safe in my opinion and should be avoided. One strategy that I have found that works just as well is to leave your new baseball glove in the car on a summer day for around one hour. Cars and trucks can get really hot during the summer (up to about 150 degrees Fahrenheit) and tend to be a great deal safer compared to ovens and microwaves.

Oils: Although I usually do not recommend this technique, many people like to put lubricants in their brand new baseball glove to soften it up. Some examples are baby oil, vaseline, shaving cream, saddle soap, or specialty glove oils. I usually don’t suggest this technique simply because it’s disputed whether it deteriorates the life span of your baseball glove and makes your baseball glove heavier since the liquid soaks into it. With the very high cost of baseball gloves currently, I for one am not going to take any risks.

Mattress: An old-school strategy to break in your baseball glove is to keep a baseball inside it all of the time, and to keep it underneath your mattress a couple of nights when you go to bed. You might also try turning it inside out and doing the same thing.

Keep in mind, owning a brand new glove is nice, but it won’t make you a better player! You need to do that by yourself! Do your best on your baseball workouts, and put that glove to use!
