How Residential Roofing Is Different From Commercial Roofing ?

by

A roofer can be required for doing residential roofing work or commercial roofing work. In your phone-book or through the internet, you can get the list of all roofers available in your city. A roofer who works on commercial roofing is different from one who does residential roofing. However, few experienced roofers can handle both commercial and residential roofing projects. In below mentioned paragraphs, we will discuss the basic difference between these types of roofing.

Type of building for which the roof is constructed determines if the roofing project will come under the category of commercial roofing or residential roofing. Just by turning a house into office does not mean that the roofing project will be commercial. For a commercial roofing project the building and roof should also be of that type only.

On contrary, in some cases the roof of a residential building may come under the category of commercial building due to its construction. If you are unable to differentiate between a residential roof and commercial roof then you may call an expert roofer to let you know.

One big difference between commercial roofs and residential ones is the size of work required to be done. First of all measure the area of the roof and number of workers required to be hired to accomplish the task. Generally for a residential roof, you need to hire a single contractor whereas for a commercial roof, a lot of workers are required.

Many commercial buildings also have a lot more extension than a residential building. A residential home will typically have a chimney jutting out. A commercial building, on the other hand may have smoke stacks, ventilation systems, pipes, mechanical wiring, a roof entrance and a skylight etc.

Unions also factor into what makes a commercial job different from a residential one. Many roofing companies are a part of a union so that they can get the higher paid unionized commercial roofing jobs. A commercial roofer with a union can’t work the non-union residential job because his union and labor costs won’t allow it.

The products and tools required to do the commercial roofing work and residential roofing work are also different. A residential roofer has fewer tools than a commercial roofer. Commercial roofers generally have all the tools required to handle bigger scale work.

Hence, first of all check if your roof is residential or commercial and then hire a roofer accordingly. In many cases, it is clear but in case of confusion, you should first get it cleared. After making sure the kind of roof you are having, choose a roofing company that is capable of doing your work.
