How Many Types Of Rifle Scopes Are Available?

by

Let’s face it, technology just keeps on advancing, and rifle scopes are no exception to the rule. There are essentially two different types of rifle scopes to choose from. The first kind is known as telescopic scopes, while the second type is called electronic scopes. In this short article, we’ll take a closer look at both of these.

Telescopic rifle scopes

Telescopic scopes are by far still the most common of all rifle scopes. These scopes are basically shaped like a tube, and of course they have an eyepiece, together with several internal lenses in order to magnify your target. On the opposite side of the eyepiece is another lens which houses the crosshairs with which we’re all familiar. The technical term for these crosshairs is “reticles”, although you may find not many people will know what you’re talking about if you refer to them by that name.

Telescopic rifle scopes all have adjustable zoom capabilities, and those at the lower end of the spectrum may only offer 3X zoom, some are as powerful as 42X, which of course is ideal if you frequently use your rifle for taking long distance shots. For this reason, telescopic scopes are seen as being extremely versatile scopes

Telescopic rifle scopes can also be adjusted up or down in order to compensate for ground elevation. Almost all of these scopes can also be adjusted left or right in order to get around the problem of wind conditions. Of course the key to getting the most out of a scope like this is being able to set it correctly.

Electronic rifle scopes

When you first lay hand on one of these scopes, you realize just how far technology has come. One of the favorite electronic scopes is the red dot scopes. These don’t utilize crosshairs at all, but instead, they mark your target with a red dot, and if you’re willing to fork out enough money for a really good one, it will even tell you exactly how far away your target is. Some even allow combine fully programmable elevation and windage settings.

When you look at your target through one of these, you’ll see the distance display, and you’ll see a red dot appear on your target in under a second. All you need to do then is move the rifle so that the dot is located on the spot you want the bullet to strike, and then squeeze the trigger. Yes, being a superb marksman has become that easy.

Electronic rifle scopes also have adjustable magnification. If you’ve ever used the zoom feature on your digital camera, you’ll know exactly what to expect, because the electronic scopes also make use of digital zooming. And, if you really don’t want to bother with having to push a button, you get red dot scopes which also have an auto-focus feature.

Some people mistake laser sights and reflex sights for rifle scopes. Do not make this mistake. Laser sights, reflex sights (a dot appears on physically the target and you fire when the dot is where you want it) and diopter sights are nor scopes at all. They are simply a sighting aid and most are open sight based.

Telescopic and electronic scopes magnify the target and make the shot easier to hit. Rifle scopes are an important part of a successful hunt. Look around some, see which one fits your needs and fill your freezer this season.
