Hints For How To Live Happily With Your Russian Wife

July 13, 2010 by

Since you have already managed to prepare for a wedding, arrange travel documents and visas and dig your way out of a small mountain of red tape, the future should be a piece of cake. Cake or not, a few hints may be in order just to make sure things go as smoothly as possible for you and your Russian wife.

Communication will be a big priority in your everyday interaction. Her English may be excellent but there are always times when what is said is not exactly what is meant. Sometimes it helps to have a human being rather than an on-line interpretation program when problem arise. To help with the subtle problems try your local language school or the community college or university. They may have programs that provide an opportunity to refine areas that seem to be difficult.

When it comes to cultural differences, be prepared to be flexible. Remember the old saying that when you marry someone you marry the whole family. Since there are many differences among American families, imagine what the differences can be when the country is different as well. Expect the unexpected and you will be more ready to bend and not break.

Does your community have any resources that can help your second half feel more at home. Since homesickness can strike at any time it is a good idea to know where any possible support groups may be found. Is there a Russian community nearby? Do they have an outreach program you can access?

If your wife is religious then you might want to research if there are any local churches that have services in Russian. You might look under Russian Orthodox, Old Believers or Christian churches that serve non-English speaking communities. Even small rural areas may have such things available.

When it comes to food you can approach it as an adventure or an obstacle. Are there any local food stores that carry Russian brands or specialty items? Bringing home the borscht is a very thoughtful act. Being sure she knows if you have any important dietary needs will help avoid having a nice dinner followed by a bad case of hives or worse. Agreeing on how many Russian and how many other kinds of cuisine you may want to try could form the basis of a great food exploration.

Kindness can help any marriage whether it is Made in America or otherwise. Agreeing to be kind first can lead to a clearer resolution of many of the problems that all husbands and wives encounter. Are you sure you know where her fears lie? Is she really comfortable with US stores, telephones, buses, driving? Because it is all so familiar to you; you may not know what presents a challenge to her. Kindness instead of laughter or raised voices goes a very long way indeed.

And last but not least patience is one of those thing we all need; married or not. Your Russian wife will need all your patience as she deals with her new situation as well as a new country and new life. Of course, she will need patience too. Maybe the whole list should go both ways. Best wishes.
