Grooming Your Dog
Dogs are very much like their human masters – proper grooming is essential in making sure they look good, feel good and develop a solid sense of self-worth. It is easy for dog hair to develop all sorts of mats and tangles, as this is due to the omnipresent factor of dirt and grime building up on the coat. So this makes grooming even more important, especially if you consider that this means quality bonding time between man and beast.
It is best to train your dog to be groomed at an early age. But, an untrained dog can still be taught to accept all the attention. Make your dog feel that brushing him up, down, left, right is a natural and normal procedure. You need not go to a professional groomer, but if you don’t have the time or the interest to groom your dog, be sure to select a groomer that handles the animals gently.
Valuable Tips In Grooming your Dog
Make a daily examination of your pet’s body parts. This checklist would include any potential infections, bumps, inflammations and other hot spots, as well as for parasites hidden in his coat. Tweeze out any ticks you find on the coat, while use a fine-tooth comb to do away with any fleas. If your dog’s ears are droopy, this may lead to infection or cause your dog to lose his hearing permanently. Examine your companion’s pads – dirt, grime, pebbles, chemicals can get caught that can infect his paws.
Brushing is more than just about removing tangles and mats, but also a way to keep your pet smelling fresh as dead hair is removed. Skin inflammation can result, believe it or not, due to tangles that are not immediately removed. To help your dog properly grow a new coat, you can try grooming him during shedding – a great time to do this would be after exercising him. If your dog has difficulty walking, you may want to give his nails a trim – monthly would be fine. Dental hygiene is maintained by using dog toothpaste and toothbrush with soft bristles twice a week. A damp cotton cloth is used to remove mucus from your dog’s eyes. While a coarse rug is appropriate in cleaning your pet’s face.
To remove any mats from your pet’s coat, brush away dead hairs before giving him a bath. Use warm water when bathing your dog. Pet shampoo must be used in small amounts. Target areas are the eyes, ears, rectum, toes and under the chin. Do not let soap water get to the eyes or ears of your pet. You also have an option to apply coat conditioner after bathing. Some breeds require more grooming than others, so when in doubt, ask a pet grooming expert or someone at your nearby pet shop as to how many times you should bathe your dog.
It would be a good idea to get a home grooming kit if you do not have one yet. This contains items such as clippers for dog toenails, a grooming brush, a coarse rug, dog shampoo, dog toothpaste, dog conditioner and coarse, medium and fine tooth combs.
