Garden Sheds with Green roofs

by

Green roofs are just roofs that have a layer of vegetation added to them. A green roof utilises living plant material as part of a roofing system. Green roofs are generally formed by layers: a waterproof membrane, a root barrier, thermal insulation, a drainage system, a filter layer, growing medium and living plant material. Green roofs must be constructed correctly to support the excess weight on the roof, but are an practically trouble-free eco-roof solution.

Intensive green roofs are labour intensive demanding irrigation, weeding and care. Extensive green roofs require very slight upkeep and have a thinner soil depth than an intensive roof. If a roof is made up of pre planted modular trays or containers which are positioned on the top of the roof then it is known as a modular green roof system.

Your backyard shed can be highly unattractive. If you live in a town or city then the view from your window will probably be made up of bricks and roofs. A green roof may be the only opportunity for bringing plants and wildlife into an otherwise manmade brick landscape, also adding a garden roof to buildings such as sheds and outhouses will amend the view. A dull, functional space can be changed into something that’s living, breathing and aesthetically pleasing just by adding a green roof.

A green roof could be planted on a garden shed, porch, summerhouse, balcony, garage or small extension. Flat roofs lend themselves the best to roof gardens although it is possible to put a green roof on a pitched, barrelled or domed roof.

Adding a green roof to a garden building will reclaim the space that they take up, improve air quality and encourage wildlife into your garden.

There are not many green roofs in the UK. Garden roofing can be a good way to help the environment, as well as being enormously fulfilling. An extensive green roof can be both very attractive and eco-friendly when added to your shed. It can provide a wonderful spot for birds to rest and for helpful insects to thrive. It also helps to decrease the amount of drain-off that the already overtaxed urban systems are being asked to handle.

A green roof will also offer sound and heat insulation for your shed. Because a green roof adds an further layering and protection from the elements, this means that the ‘life’ of your shed roof will be extended. Eventually this means that any shed roof maintenance or replacement will be far less often.

Assess the roof that you are planning to use as it’s important that the building is sturdy enough to hold the structure you build. If you have a sloping roof it’s best to add vertical supports at the lower corners by cementing posts into the ground. If in doubt about its load bearing potential, get a professional to advise you on this matter.

Every green roof is unique due to the building and the location. Some traditional roofing companies do not have experience of green roofs. Look for roofers who typically work with eco-friendly roofs and talk about the alternative materials available. Reputable companies will be able to show you projects that they have completed and will be able to give you advice.
