John James divorces his wife because of some family problems and lives with his middle school children. John James is a writer by nature and has little bit real world experience. Being a single parent, he finds it difficult to control his children. All three of them move to South Carolina, where they stay in a dirt house near the road. This house already contained a Indian burial mound. Without knowing about the burial mound and its consequences, they start living there. His daughter Louisa enters her puberty stage and experiences some biological changes in her. Her father never notices these changes and he does not know anything about these changes.

Therefore, he finds the previous owners of the place and tries to collect some data related to the place and the Indian burial mound. He also takes care of his frightened son Sam. What happens to Louisa and does her father able to find a solution is the climax of the movie The New Daughter.

Kevin Costner, academy award winner, plays the role of John. Ivana Baquero plays the daughter Louisa role and Gattlin Griffith plays the role of John son Sam.
